GANANOQUE DAM – RIVER FLOWS

February 21, 2014 Alerts

Gananoque, ON – Gananoque residents are being reminded that melting ice and snow combined with rain, makes it especially important for people to stay away from the St. Lawrence River and Gananoque River watercourses.

Murray Hall, Fortis Generation has notified the Town that the dam on the Gananoque River has been opened. With the opening of the dam, the high volume of water flowing will thin the ice underneath causing gaps that may not be noticeable. The ice may appear to be solid however the thickness varies and ice conditions cannot be trusted. Increased flow from Marble Rock Dam upstream of the Gananoque Dam has increased the danger on the Gananoque River.

“The message is to stay away from the Rivers.,” indicated Mayor Erika Demchuk. “It’s a dangerous time around the waterways. We want everyone to stay safe.”
