Lead Water Service Line Replacement Program
The Town of Gananoque is announcing implementation of its Lead Water Service Line Replacement Program. This interest free loan program was approved by Town Council in May 2017, to assist homeowners with the cost of replacing their lead water service connections. All residents with homes that have lead water service lines are encouraged to take advantage of the program.
If you would like more information about the program please contact the Public Works Administrative Assistant to receive copies of the “Lead Water Service Line Replacement Interest Free Loan Program Guidelines” and the “Private Lead Water Service Line Replacement Interest Free Loan Program Application Agreement Form”. If you have specific questions about the program please contact Sherri Ogilvie, Utilities Supervisor.
For more information about the benefits of replacing your lead water service line please access the following fact sheet prepared by the Government of Ontario:
Lead Sampling Program
In 2007, The Ministry of the Environment (MOE) made a series of changes to the regulations regarding sampling and testing of lead in drinking water. These changes require the municipality to sample and test private plumbing in residential and commercial buildings. The Town of Gananoque completes lead sampling to meet MOE requirements. The Town is currently seeking volunteers for the June 15th to October 15th sampling round.
Whether or not you’re interested in participating in the Lead Water Service Line Replacement Program we ask that you please consider contacting the Utility Compliance Coordinator to schedule an appointment to have drinking water sampling completed in your home.
Verification of Lead Connection Lines:
If your house was built prior to 1955 you may have lead plumbing within your home. Homes built before 1990 may also have lead piping. In 1989 the building code was changed to ban lead piping and the use of solder.
If you are unsure if your water service connection line is composed of Lead you may contact the Public Works Administrative Assistant. If the water meter in your home has been replaced recently it may be possible to verify the material by checking utilities files. If you have not had your water meter replaced you may call and make an appointment to do so. During the appointment your water service connection will be inspected and verified as part of the replacement.
