Effective October 7, 2026, Ontario One Call, the authority in Ontario for administrating underground utility locates, has officially changed its name to Ontario Dig Authority.
If residents are planning to dig as part a project, they are required by the Province of Ontario to request an underground utility locate. From the Ontario Dig Authority website:
- If you are planting a tree, building a fence or deck, landscaping your property, or planning a larger excavation project, you must request a public utility locate before you dig. Contact Ontario Dig Authority at least 5 business days before a single-address project or 10 business days before a multi-address or large project. It’s free, it’s easy, and it’s the law.
Ontario Dig Authority administrates the locate process for all of Ontario, ensuring that all utility organizations with infrastructure within the locate request area are contacted to mark that infrastructure, usually with paint and/or flags, before excavation work takes place. Such utilities include telephone wire, TV and internet cable, fibre optic cable, signal wire, electrical wire, natural gas pipes, drinking water pipes, sanitary sewer pipes, and storm sewer pipes.
These colour-coded locate markings help inform and protect excavators from injury and infrastructure from damage.
