Strategic Plan Public Meeting to be held on Tuesday, February 10 at 5:00 PM at the Lou Jeffries Arena.

Municipal Responsibilities - What the Town Can Act On

Local (municipal) government delivers the services that most directly impact daily life in Gananoque. These services are provided using property tax revenue and federal and provincial grants, they include:

  • Local roads, bridges, sidewalks, and street lighting
  • Utilities including drinking water, wastewater, stormwater systems, and lagoons
  • Parks, recreation facilities, trails, play grounds, sports courts, and arenas
  • Libraries, festivals and local events, cultural programming, tourism support
  • Local economic development, create conditions for planning and development, approvals, including surplus land review
  • Financial contributions to County-wide social services, housing/homelessness supports, public health and daycare
  • By-law enforcement, fire services, policing, and contributions to county-wide land ambulance
  • Municipal budgeting, tax and water rate setting, and asset management planning

Not in the Town's scope: hospitals, health care, social services and social assistance programs directed by other levels of government, schools, provincial highways, courts, correctional services/the supreme court, immigration policy, national/provincial environmental regulations, border services, post office, RCMP and military, banking, trade and commerce, and foreign affairs and policy.
