Council Meeting Highlights – January 17, 2023

  • Councillor Vicki Leaky was appointed as Deputy Mayor for the remainder of the Council term.   
  • Meg Dabros and Brett Christopher from the Thousand Islands Accommodation Partners (TIAP) provided a 2022 Overview of the spending of the Municipal Accommodation Tax. Staff were directed to prepare a report regarding compliance with the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) Agreement. 
  • MPAC Regional Manager and Account Manager provided an online presentation to discuss MPAC Property Assessment in Ontario. 
  • Council passed a motion directing staff to bring back a report to review the Mobile Canteen By-law with regards to increasing the number of licenses permitted.  
  • Mayor John Beddows and Deputy Mayor Leakey were approved to attend the AMO Conference in London, Ontario from August 20-23, 2023.
  • Council passed a motion to direct staff to bring back a report to look at amending the Consumption of Liquor in Public Places By-law with regards to private bookings.
  • Council passed a motion directing staff to bring back a report to create a Waterfront Music Committee of Council.
  • Council passed a motion to direct staff to explore various options when purchasing equipment with a capital cost of >$50,000. 
  • The 2023 Operating and Capital Budget By-law was read a first and second time and will be considered and read a third time for final passage on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.  Staff were directed to proceed with Option #2 as it relates to funding the additional $60,000 needed for Joint Services.  The additional funds will be found by funding the Community Grant Budget and Council Grant budget from the Casino Revenue rather than taxation.  
  • The 2023 Operating and Capital Budget By-law for Water and Wastewater was read a first and second time and will be considered for final passage on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. Council opted for Option #1 to fund the 2023 operational shortfall by further increasing rates.
  • The General Fees and Rates By-law was amended to increase 2023 Marina slip holder fees by 6% and adding an additional 1% to the capital fee contribution. 
  • Council directed staff to publish a Request for Proposals (RFP) for an Integrity Commissioner. 
  • Due to time constraints, the remaining items on the Agenda were deferred until the February 7th Regular Council Meeting.
