Council Meeting Highlights – April 18, 2023

Town News
  • Mayor Beddows declared Friday, April 28, 2023 the National Day of Mourning in Gananoque to honour workers killed, injured, disabled or who suffer disease as a result of work.
  • Mayor Beddows declared the week of May 7 to May 13, 2023 as "Emergency Preparedness Week" in the Town of Gananoque. 
  • Council directed staff to issue a Request for Quotations to determine cost to remove the King Street Pedestrian Bridge.
  • Council appointed Ryan Chartrand (Homebody), Lesley Poole (Pistachio Cafe) and Shannon Treanor (Lighthouse Provisions) to the BIA Board.
  • Council reviewed and reaffirmed the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.   
  • Council referred the cost of $37,035 for bilingual Lowertown information signs to the 2024 budget deliberations for consideration 
  • Council postponed their decision on the future of 400 Stone Street North to the May 2nd meeting.
  • Council repealed the by-law authorizing the Mayor and Clerk to sign an agreement with Principles Integrity, as the Town’s integrity commissioner and also passed a motion to reconsider the appointment of Tony Fleming as the Town’s Integrity Commissioner.  The decision on who to appoint as the Town’s Integrity Commissioner will be discussed at a future meeting.  
  • Council received the monthly Capital Matters Pending Report 
  • Council approved the Tourism Advisory Panel’s request to draw $30,000 from the TAP reserve to go towards 2023 initiatives.  
  • Council approved a renewal lease agreement with Stone’s Mill Investment Ltd. for 25 Mill Street for a 5 year term (plus an additional 5 year option) at a basic rent of $10.30 Increasing to $10.50 per square foot over the term, plus a management fee, subject to agreement by the various doctors, and subject to final review by the Town’s legal counsel. Council also approved a renewal sub-lease agreement with Doctors Hart, Therrien, Malevich, and McLoughlin with the same terms. 
  • Council authorized a 1 year extension with Kiley Paving Ltd., for the provision of asphalt repairs, installation and replacement services, with a 10% increase from the 2022 rates.
  • Council received the Seniors Community Grant Program Post Project Report for information. 
  • Council approved a 2 year renewal lease agreement with the 1000 Islands Gananoque Chamber of Commerce and the Thousand Islands Accommodation Partners for office space at 10 King Street East. 
  • A budget deviation of $20,581.62 was received to repair the old Town Hall staircase. 
  • Council directed staff to bring forward a report on the cost of mitigating the parking shortage in lowertown through conduct of all necessary work to pave the south side of water street facing the 1000 Islands History Museum. Where possible, Staff are directed to re-plant trees removed in this process on municipal property elsewhere.  
  • Council approved the amendments to the Mobile Canteen By-law and General Fees and Rates By-law.
